Speak – is usually more formal or serious than talk

  • I am going to speak my teacher about my grades.
  • Did you speak to your boss?
  • My wife wants to speak to me.
  • We are going to speak to the doctor.

Talk – is usually used for informal or for causal commutation

  • We are going to talk to Jenni.
  • Your sister wants to talk to me.
  • My teacher wants to talk to my mother.
  • Did you talk to the people upstairs?
